OAA deLIGHT 2006 Conference - Ottawa

OAA Conference
May 2006
May 10 - 13, 2006
"deLIGHT: Architecture's overlooked third objective"
The Westin Hotel, Ottawa
2006 OAA Conference + Ottawa Regional Society of
Architects (ORSA) Centennial
While we all are aware of the importance of function and
structural integrity of our buildings, the poetic and
sensual role architecture plays in our culture would
appear to be an afterthought. The typical North American
architect professes to enjoy nothing more than designing
beautiful spaces but this is often expressed as a
forbidden pleasure, something to do in secret while the
nuts and bolts are carefully laid out to the
satisfaction of the person or corporation actually
paying the bills.
It doesn't have to be so. More and more, big business
is waking up to the realization that the promise of
pleasure in all aspects of our culturefood, wine,
music, clothing, personal adornment, art and yes, even
architecturesells. But even without this mercantile
endorsement, many architects would still choose to
include some measure of beauty in their designs, if only
to justify it to themselves that it is indeed
architecture they are practicing, recognizing the innate
quality of delight in good design.
It is the objective of this proposal to draw together
examples from a wide number of the arts to show how
delight can invigorate our profession. Architecture is
more than building and there is nothing like a shot of
inspiration to make it all worthwhile. If cooks,
vintners, decorators, gardeners, and others can fire the
public imagination with their original, if not at times
outrageous creations, what can possibly hold back the
architect from doing likewise?
